How Long Does It Take for Omega-3 Supplements to Work?

Omega-3 fatty acids are crucial for your health.  But, your body can’t produce these types of fatty acids. Therefore, you need to get enough of this essential acid in your diet. If you can’t get enough of this acid from your diet, you will need to take a daily supplement to maintain or improve your health. Today, we’re taking a closer look at how quickly you can start enjoying the benefits of supplementing this acid and why supplementation is important.

How Long Does It Take for Omega-3 Supplements to Work?

Levels of this fatty acid increase in your body quickly once you start a supplement regimen. However, it is important to keep in mind that it may be anywhere from six to 24 weeks before you start noticing a significant improvement in the symptoms you are experiencing. Furthermore, it is important to note that you should take a fatty acid supplement daily for optimal health.

What Is the Optimal Supplement Regimen?

Your primary care physician can advise you on your optimal supplement regimen based on your unique needs. However, the American Heart Association, or AHA, advises that adults should take anywhere from half a gram to a full gram of this group of fatty acids daily. You should also know that the Office of Dietary Supplements advises that there is an RDA for one type of this fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).

Males who are at least 14 years of age should consume 1.6 grams of ALA daily through their diet and supplement regimen. Generally, females who are 14 years old or older need to consume 1.1 grams of ALA every day. However, there are a couple of exceptions for women. For example, if you are pregnant, you should consume 1.4 grams of this fatty acid daily, and the RDA for nursing women is 1.3 grams.

What Are the Potential Health Benefits of Supplementing This Fatty Acid?

This type of fatty acid is great for decreasing inflammation. Therefore, supplementing this type of acid has the potential to mitigate the risk of or help treat any inflammation-related illnesses. There is a lot of research on the effects of this supplement on certain medical conditions, while research on other illnesses is in its infancy. For instance, it has been shown that supplementing this acid can prevent or manage heart disease.

Furthermore, supplementing this anti-inflammatory acid can reduce triglyceride levels, manage rheumatoid arthritis, and lower high blood pressure. For example, research shows that supplementing this fatty acid can decrease systolic blood pressure by four to 15. Similarly, diastolic blood pressure can decrease by two to eight. This type of fatty acid is also very important for the healthy development of fetuses.

It can take up to six months to feel the benefits of taking fatty acid supplements, but some people can enjoy the benefits in as few as six weeks.
