3 Risks of Relying on Unhealthy Energy Drinks

At times, we all feel a lack of energy. Sometimes it’s due to a lack of sleep, and in other cases, we’ve been worn down by the everyday stress of life. In these situations, it’s tempting to reach for an energy drink as a quick-fix energy booster. We do this even though we know the real solution lies in a consistently healthy lifestyle. Let’s look at some of the dangerous risks that come with relying on unhealthy energy drinks.

3 Risks of Relying on Unhealthy Energy Drinks As Energy Boosters

1. Health Risks From Caffeine and Other Stimulants

Many heavily promoted energy drinks rely on high amounts of caffeine in an attempt to deliver on their promise of increased energy and alertness. The negative side effects associated with excessive caffeine consumption are well documented.  They range from headaches and jittery feelings to anxiety and insomnia. While these are unpleasant enough, there are much deeper health concerns when it comes to the excessive use of stimulants.

Caffeine and other stimulants can cause more forceful heart contractions, which is dangerous for anyone with heart conditions. They can also elevate blood pressure, which increases the risk of stroke and other health problems related to hypertension. Further, many energy drinks contain other stimulants such as guarana, taurine, and L-carnitine. These have not undergone the level of research that caffeine has, and may carry additional unknown risks.

2. Too Much Sugar Consumption

The American Heart Association recognizes the dangers of excessive sugar intake, recommending that men and women consume no more than 36 and 25 grams of sugar respectively per day. Many energy drinks contain double or even triple that amount of sugar in a single can. The dangerous health risks of excessive sugar consumption are well known and are particularly dangerous for the children and adolescents these energy drinks are often marketed to.

High-sugar diets can cause excessive inflammation, which is linked to chronic conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Consuming too much sugar is also one of the leading factors contributing to obesity. Beyond these dangerous health risks, excessive sugar consumption is also linked with multiple cognitive impairments, memory issues, and emotional disorders such as anxiety and depression.

3. Tolerance Means You Need More and More

As is the case with people who consume other dangerous substances, those who regularly rely on unhealthy energy drinks may find themselves needing more and more to produce the same desired effects. Caffeine and other stimulants can increase alertness and energy in the short term, but these effects tend to wear off over time. Further, the body naturally builds tolerance to these stimulants the same way it does to alcohol and other drugs.

This means you may find yourself consuming more and more of these energy drinks just to get that same boost. This further compounds the previously outlined risks to physical health and mental and emotional well-being.

These are just a few of the many risks associated with the regular consumption of unhealthy energy drinks. Contact Panacea Scientific to learn about better alternatives to boost your energy and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
