Why Are Multiple Strains Important in a Probiotic?

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeast that people consume to balance the levels of microorganisms that already live in your intestines. They do everything from boosting your immune system to reducing the amount of harmful bacteria living in your gut. But why is it so important to have multiple strains in a probiotic? Keep reading to find out.

What Are Probiotics?

Probiotics are microorganisms that live in your gut, or small and large intestines. As a collective, these organisms are called flora. This flora is made up of over 400 species of bacteria, and they can weigh up to three to five pounds. Maintaining a healthy gut is critical, because it is the home of your lymphoid tissue, the network of tissue that accounts for 60 to 70 percent of your immune system.

If you do not maintain your gut health, you are highly susceptible to disease and infection, and your body will not digest and metabolize food optimally. Fortunately, with the help of probiotics, you can absorb more nutrients from your food, boost your immune system, and protect your health.

The Importance of Multiple Strains

Having multiple strains in your probiotic is so important because each strain has a different function. The most beneficial probiotic strains are Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus acidophilus. These are usually shortened to B. bifidum and L. acidophilus.

Yeast

Yeasts are also beneficial in probiotics. Saccahomyces boulardii maintains flora in the gut and prevents and treats diarrhea from various sources, ranging from antibiotic treatment to traveler’s diarrhea. Sacccharomyces cerevisiae is used in a number of culinary applications, such as causing dough to rise and making alcohol. This yeast is very high in folic acid, protein, fiber, and B vitamins.

B. Bifidum

B. Bifidum is most commonly found in the walls of the large intestine and vagina. These good bacteria protect your body from being colonized by bad bacteria. They also help your body absorb nutrients, such as minerals, and lowers the pH of your body.

L. Acidophilus

The L. acidophilus lives primarily in the mouth and the walls of the vagina and small intestine. They produce crucial enzymes needed to break food down, such as lactase, which your body needs to process dairy. Like B. bifidum, it also lowers the pH of the environment it is found in, making it inhospitable to bad bacteria. This also protects your body from disease and infection. L. acidophilus also aids digestion by helping your body absorb key nutrients, such as vitamins B and K, fatty acids, and calcium.

B. Breve

Bifidobacterium breve is a unique probiotic in that it can digest many molecules previously thought non-digestible, such as very tough plant fibers. It also protects your body from E. coli, inhibits the growth of candida albicans, known for causing yeast infections. Furthermore, it prevents gas, diarrhea, and other forms of gastrointestinal distress.

L. Helveticus

Lactobacillus helveticus reduces lactose intolerance symptoms, prevents diarrhea, assists in the absorption of calcium, and may lower blood pressure and levels of bad cholesterol. Found in the intestines, this strain of bacteria is a powerful pathogen fighter. Research also indicates that these bacteria support a balanced mood and help you manage your anxiety and stress.

S. Thermophilus

Streptococcus thermophilus is one of the most important bacteria strains to include in your diet. Found in yogurt and cheese, it converts lactose into lactic acid, which is particularly helpful to people suffering from lactose intolerance. It also prevents food poisoning by protecting you against harmful bacteria.
